Els Results: Is this the best ever score for EGS?

Noel Connolly pretty much blew away all the opposition at the Els Day with a mammoth 47 points - this was an incredible 11 shots below his handicap.... Great, great score and one which I can't recall ever seeing in the EGS. Second place went to Nigel Hopkins on 40 points who beat Paul Stump on a countback. To finish off the day, NTPs went to Craig McBride and Dave Green.

Paul Nightingale Defends Club Championship
Paul Nightingale successfully defended this year's Emirates Flight Catering Club Championship at the Els. He played an excellent round and came in with a gross 77. In the end he won easily - his nearest rival was Iain Lachlan who was 7 shots adrift. Tim Collins came third with a gross score of 85.
The "net" prizes were won by Didier Sanders (39 points), Mike Woosley (38 points) and in third, Franc Michaud (36 points). The best guest was Jim Pugh who scored 38 points. Nearest-the-pins were won by Trevor Sanders and Jim Pugh.
Dean Moss and Peter Dally - Winners of the Microsoft Summer Challenge

Congratulations to both Dean Moss and Peter Dally who won their respective divisions and secured the two Xbox 360s that were generously donated from our sponsor of the Al Badia Summer Challenge, Microsoft. Dean carded a final round 39 points at Al Badia, which not only won the day's event but also leapfrogged him to the top of the Division 1 category - his second highest score of 34 points meant a combined total of 73 points, 2 points clear from Ted Green his nearest rival. Peter Dally scored an even more impressive total of 76 points which were accumulated in his first two games - his nearest rival was Pete Lindsay on 69 points.

Other winners winners on the day were Noel Connolly (35 points) and Ryan Carter (33 points) who were Dean's closest rivals on the day. The "Nearest-the-Pin" prizes went to Kader "(should've been a hole in one!)" Tazerout and Wayne Classen.

To round-off an already exciting day , second-placed Noel Connolly joined Dean and Peter in being the recipient of an Xbox 360, which he won in a special raffle draw that was conducted during the prize giving ceremony!

Results (Al Badia and Jebel Ali)

Below is an update and results from the last two events (Jebel Ali and the 2nd round of the Al Badia / Microsoft Summer Challenge).

Jebel Ali: Saturday 5th Sep

Although there was a small turnout, some great golf was played with Pete Lindsay taking the spoils with a great score of 40 points! Close on his heels were two relatively new members: Steve Allen with 38 points and Ryan Carter on 34 points. Mike Wells and Jason Kendall took the "Nearest the Pin" prizes. Please note that the prize giving will be done at the next event at Al Badia on 25th September.

Al Badia: Saturday 25th July

This was the second round of the Microsoft-sponsored Summer Challenge at Al Badia, and at stake are some lovely Xboxs together, with the latest Tiger Woods 2010 game, which according to my sources is "awesome"! The overall event was won by another Pete - this time it was Peter Dally who won with 40 points, another great achievement given the summer heat. This puts Pete in a very good position to win the Division 2 category, although there are others snapping at his heels. Paul Nightingale came a close second with 39 points and again this puts him in an excellent position in the Division 1 category. Last, but not least, one of our guests on the day, Paul Fisher, who came a close third with 37 points. The "Nearest the Pin" prizes went to Paul Fisher and Roger Duthie.

Registration is now open for the final round of the Microsoft-sponsored Summer Challenge at Al Badia and one good round from any player could  be enough to win the spoils. Details of the event are:

Date: Saturday 25th September

Time: 1230 rolling start, (however we are trying to get a 1300 shotgun start arranged)

Venue: Al Badia

Price: AED 350/-

We will be having the main prize-giving directly after the event and cold drinks and sandwiches will be being served. All prizes from the previous four events will be handed out also. You will also be pleased to know that even if you haven't won an Xbox through your golfing prowess, there will be another opportunity as we will be having a small raffle during the prize ceremony to win one (together with the Tiger Woods game)!

Microsoft Summer Series at Al Badia: Round 1 Results
I hope you all enjoyed the first match of the Microsoft sponsored Summer Series hosted by Four Seasons (Al Badia)? Although hot, the course was in good shape and ensured some great scores.

Winners on the day were:

1st: Aman Sangar (41 points)
2nd: Pete Lindsay (38 points) – countback
3rd: Ted Green (38 points)

NTP (hole 3): Pete Lindsay
NTP (hole 11): Franck Michaud

Note: All vouchers for the winners will be handed out at the prize giving of the final mach of the Summer Series in September.

So, who is vying for the xboxs? Obviously Ted and Pete have started their Summer campaign well and are now leading their respective divisions (Cat 1: 0-14; Cat 2: 14-28) although there are a few golfers biting at their heels. In category 1, John Wilby (37 points), Dean Moss (34 points) and Sat Sembi (34 points) posted good scores. In category 2, Peter Dally (36 points) and Rosslee Wahid (35 points) still have everything to play for! However, with still two matches to go, everything is still up for grabs – see you at the next event (registration is open)!
Microsoft-sponsored Summer Series at Four Seasons Resort (Al Badia)
We have organised a "Summer Series" event which will be hosted by Four Season Golf Resort (Al Badia) and the prizes are being sponsored by Microsoft. Details are as follows:

  • Each event is to be held at the Four Seasons Course (Al Badia) and will cost not more than AED 350 /- per person. (Note, only "fully-paid" members of the Society will be allowed to register for the events).
  • Dates of the events are: (1) Friday 19th June, 0700 rolling start. (2) Saturday 25th July, 0700 rolling start. (3) Friday 25th September, 1230 rolling start.
  • The series takes place over three events where the final winning score will be taken from the best two stableford scores over the three match series (i.e. the two best scorecards out of three count). If you only play in two events, then these two scores will count towards your total.
  • Where there is a tie, the most recent scorecard will be taken; if this is the same then the best back 9 of the most recent card will be the deciding factor, and so on.
  • Microsoft have provided some fantastic prizes: 3 Xboxs with the latest Tiger Woods game (2010) - this game is yet to be released to the general public. The prizes will be distributed between two categories: Cat 1 (Handicaps of 0 - 14) and Cat 2 (Handicaps of 15 and above). The third Xbox will be raffled at the presentation after the last match - raffle tickets for this will be sold at the prize ceremony. (Note: based on the high stableford scores at Sharjah we are reviewing the handicaps of Society members - watch this space for further details....)
  • There will be small prizes given for winners of the individual events.

The first game of the Microsoft / Four Seasons Summer Series is now open for registration.
Handicaps: New Society Rules
Since the closure of Nad Al Sheba, many of our Society members have taken the option of joining the various seasonal, corporate and mid-week deals which have been promoted. As a result, the administration of handicaps has obviously been more difficult as the clubs, for these memberships, will generally not administer handicaps.

Therefore, the Committee have introduced a simple form of handicap administration based on a version of the the EGA rules:

For every shot over a stableford points system of 36 points, a players handicap will be cut in the following manner:
  • H/cap 5 and below: 0.1 per point
  • H/cap 6 to 17: 0.2 per point
  • H/Cap 18 and above: 0.3 per point

For example, if a player of handicap 20 (exact: 20.0) scores 41 points, they will be cut (5 * 0.3 = 1.5) = 18.5. This equals a playing handicap of 19 (18.4 would indicate a playing handicap of 18). Note: where we have a medal format, scorecards will be converted into stableford points and adjusted accordingly. Also, there will be no increases in handicap - handicaps will only be cut (reduced) by the Society, not increased.

We recognise that these handicaps will not be official, but we also wish to ensure there is an even distribution of prizes during our calendar year. We will then review at the end of the year to see how successful it has been to achieve this objective and whether we continue doing this task.

For your information, we will initiate this system from our last event at Sharjah. Therefore, there were several handicap changes (a "*" represents a change in playing handicap):

  1. Wayne Classen: 18.0 -> 15.9 (16)*
  2. Wolf Lennert Didszuhn: 22.0 -> 21.7 (22)
  3. Iain Lachlan: 5.0 -> 4.7 (5)
  4. Craig McBride 11.0 -> 10.8 (11)
  5. Dean Moss 15.0 -> 14.4 (14)*
  6. Phil Stuckle 20.0 -> 19.4 (19)*
  7. Donna Tapp: 36.0 -> 35.1 (35)*
  8. Mike Woosley: 16.0 -> 15.6 (16)

If you are a member of a club and do get your handicap monitored on a regular basis, you should ensure that this is updated on the website.

For those who wish to take a more active role in administering their handicaps, there are excellent websites to do this:

(1) oobgolf (unofficial handicap tracker, but great statistics and community site)
(2) Today's Golfer (UK): official handicap tracker.
